Register a domain name
You can cancel with your old service and not worry about it. It is your domain, after all. No matter who you go with, you are purchasing it from (formerly internic). That is where I recommend that you go, that website. Make sure that YOU own the domain name that you think that you do before you cancel anything.
In the future do your business direct. Why involve a middle-man?

Nothing. You can cancel if you want, since you will not be getting money back anyhow. No, you won’t lose the money you’ve paid the company you’re transferring too.

Make sure you’ve paid your new registrar the annual registration fee for the coming year and that the transfer is in process and THEN cancel your domain renewal/account at your old registrar.
Nobody “owns” a domain name - you “lease” it from the registry - so if your lease expires you’ll lose the domain.
Be on the safe side and contact your new registrar’s support and confirm that all is in order for the transfer.
